Volunteering at KYA
Volunteers are essential to the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). KYA is a 3-Day experiential learning conference in which students participate directly in a simulation of the Commonwealth’s democratic process.
Volunteers may be asked to perform a wide variety of roles at the conference. Please review volunteer responsibilities below. Please take a moment to view the full KYA Volunteer Job Description. Sign-up information is at the bottom of this page.
Potential Roles
- Committee & Chamber Support Monitor legislative committees in session. Check in with the chairpersons assigned to lead the committee to ensure they are prepared, leading the session in a professional manner, and staying on time. Keep note of any outstanding delegates/delegations. Ensure the committee dismisses in a timely manner and that students are aware of where to go after the committee adjourns.
- General Assembly Support Ensure students remain quiet and attentive and are not using cell phones/other electronic devices (outside of Ranking and Amendment Forms). Help monitor the participants and let Y-Staff know if anyone is being disruptive.
- Support for Fun/Social Events Help with Silent Disco, Karaoke, and more!
- Elections Support Help monitor Voting System. Ensure students are not voting more than one time. Assist in counting votes.
- Supreme Court Support Help lead our Supreme Court program at our high school conferences. This volunteer will have responsibilities including managing the Supreme Court schedule of rounds, ensuring student attorney teams arrive at their rounds promptly, supporting the legal professionals serving as the justice panels, and supporting the student Attorney General as they manage the functioning of the Constitutionality room.
- Cabinet and Lobbyist Support Help lead our Cabinet and Lobbyist program at our high school conferences. This volunteer will have responsibilities including helping manage student meetings and schedules, filming TedTalks recorded by students, and more!
- Media Specialist Must be skilled in photography and video compilation. This volunteer will document our conference and build the conference video.

- HS 4: December 4 - 6, register by November 20
- MS 3: December 8 - 10, register by November 24
IMPORTANT
- You MUST have a Background Check completed prior to volunteering at any Kentucky YMCA Youth Association program.
- You MUST complete Child Safety Training prior to volunteering at any Kentucky YMCA Youth Association program.
- These documents will be sent to volunteers after registering to volunteer (if needed).
