KUNA Officers, Committee Chairs and Doorkeepers
Presiding Officers
Each KUNA is led by a team of Presiding Officers, who are Student Y members elected by the Assembly or chosen by their program area to serve for a full year leading up to their Assembly. Presiding Officers “preside” over (lead) a specific program area at KUNA.
*Advisors, please note that your school must attend the conference that your Presiding Officers are serving.
In addition to their leadership at KUNA, Presiding Officers work throughout the year on a variety of tasks and projects. An overview of the year-round responsibilities of our Presiding Officers is available in the Program Area Resources section of the KUNA Resource Page.
KUNA and KYA Presiding Officers attend Spring PO Check-In (HS POs only) and Fall PO Retreat to train and plan with their Presiding Officer teams:
Spring PO Check-In (HS KYA and KUNA POs Only)
Fall PO Retreat (HS & MS KYA and KUNA POs)
In addition to their retreats, Presiding Officers will also attend and lead Supporting Officer Training once all Supporting Officers have been appointed or selected via application.
Supporting Officers - Applications for 2026 are Closed
Each program area also has Supporting Officers, who have a specific leadership role within their area.
Supporting officer positions are either application-based or appointed (see the chart at the bottom of this page for which positions require applications):
- Application-Based – Must apply, then register for SO Training if selected
- Appointed – Only need to register for SO Training when it opens
To apply for an application-based Supporting Officer position, click the link below. This application is only open for a set period of time:
Committee Chairs
Delegations may send one or two students to fulfill the Committee Chair role, but it is not required. Chairpeople must be in the 8th or 12th grade and have previously attended at least one KUNA before they can register.
Keep in mind that some conferences have more chairpeople submitted on registration than we have room in committees, so not every student is guaranteed a chairing role. The "First Chair" will have priority in being assigned, and the "Chair Alternate" might be waitlisted if necessary.
To be eligible to chair at KUNA, prospective chairpeople must complete three items:
1) Attend a chair training (dates are posted below),
2) Join the Google Classroom and complete the quiz with a 10/10 (they have unlimited attempts), and
3) Attend the chair meeting on day 1 of your conference. Chairs will receive an email reminding them of this info after registration for each conference closes, and again when chair assignments go out roughly a week prior to your conference.
If you have any questions about debate, please email Nick, our Debate Lead, at nick@kyymca.org.
Committee Chair Training Info
Once you have been appointed as a Committee Chair (including alternates) by your advisor, you must register for Committee Chair Training. You can register for these trainings through the student portal.
All Committee Chairs are required to participate in one of three virtual training sessions which will be held from 12pm to 2pm EST on the following dates:
- Saturday February 7, 2026
- Saturday, February 28, 2026
- Sunday, March 8, 2026
If you are unable to attend any of these sessions, please reach out to Nick at nick@kyymca.org to make other arrangements.
*If you are a clerk for a Presiding Officer, you should attend a training since you'll need to know how to facilitate debate with your PO.
Doorkeepers
Doorkeepers assist with logistics in our debate rooms. At KUNA, this includes updating dockets, escorting sponsors to the appropriate room, and assisting chairpeople and Y-Staff as needed.
Each delegation may submit two names for doorkeepers on registration, with the understanding that spots are based on availability which may vary by conference. Upperclassmen will be given priority when assigning roles if necessary.
