Officer Positions

Student Y officers maintain consistent communication with advisors and the KY YMCA, help their Chapter have fun, stay organized, keep track of service and participation, and keep the service goal of Student Y at the forefront of the chapter.

Student Ys can choose which officer positions will best serve their chapter, however we’ve provided examples of the roles we strongly recommend each chapter have. Officers should be elected or appointed, and all officer positions should be indicated within 30 days of their election. We recommend holding elections at the end of April to allow outgoing and incoming officers the chance to meet about the coming year. It is the first duty of your new Officer Team to fill out the Student Y Officer Elections form by the end of the open-affiliation periods in September and February each year to ensure your Officers receive all resources, training schedule, and their invite to the Student Y Council.

Recommended Officer Structure

For high school chapters we recommend a 5 person officer team consisting of a President, Vice President, Service Chair, Civic Engagement Chair, and a Secretary. There are a lot of moving pieces at the high school level, and we’ve found a 5 person team makes the workload a little easier. We do have a handful of Chapters that have found success with an Officer Team with no specific job title.

For middle school chapters we recommend a 3 person officer team consisting of a President, Vice President, and Service Chair. At the middle school level the focus on voter registration and engagement is slightly scaled back and with fewer meetings during the course of the year the work of the Secretary can typically be split between the Officer Team. We do encourage an odd number of Officers so that there will never be a tied vote.

We encourage you to do what you feel is best for your chapter and as always to reach out to Vontella Thomas at vontella@kyymca.org if you have any questions.
